     Edward Clapp was born c 1605 in Salcombe, Devon, England.1 He (1) married Prudence Clapp, daughter of Nicholas Clapp and Elisabeth.1,2 He (2) married Susanna Cockerill b 1646.1,2 He died on 8 Jan 1664/65 in Dorchester, Massachusetts.1

Edward immigrated in 1635 on the 'Hopewell' to Dorchester with his wife Prudence.1,2
     Edward Clapp took the oath of fidelity in Dorchester on 7 Dec 16361 He was several times a Selectman for Dorchester, and served on a number of committees. In the land division of 18 Mar 1637/38, he received four acres, one rood and twelve rods in the neck, and four acres, two roods and thirty-two rods in the cow pasture.1
Edward Clapp and Prudence Clapp had three children, the last two born in Dorchester: Elizabeth (prob. b. in England), Prudence (b. 28 Dec 1637), and Ezra (b. 22 May 1640).1
Edward Clapp and Susanna Cockerill had eight children, all born & baptized in Dorchester: Nehemiah (bp. 10 Oct 1646), Susanna (bp. 10 Dec 1648), William (6 Jul 1651), Joseph (bp. 13 Aug 1654), Esther (bp. 3 Aug 1656), Abigail (b. 27 Apr 1659), Joshua (b. 12 May 1661), and Jonathan (b. 23 Mar 1664).1
Edward Clapp made a will on 3 Jan 1664/65. The inventory taken 19 Feb 1664/5 totalled £794 15s. 3d. of which £490 10s. was real estate..
It mentions his [unnamed] wife, his son Nehemiah (who was under 21 at the time) will get twenty pounds more then his daughters, the four daughters (he only names two, Susanna and Esther) to have equal portions. His eldest son Ezra gets the lionshare of the estate. His wife and Ezra to be executors, and his brothers Roger Clapp, John Capen and Nicholas Clapp to be overseers.1

     Most secondary sources, incl The Mary&John (source 434) have Edward with 5 children with his 1st wife and 4 with his 2nd. However, the will of his wife Prudence's sister Jane's husband John Alderman in 1657 only mentions 3 children of her brother.1,2
